43 TRUMPETER SWANS - ** HIGHEST # this season (ever maybe? ANY info on this would be appreciated) were seen at REDA on 12/10/01. They were dispersed between Ellis Bay near Teal Pond and then the rest were in Heron Pond. Another birder looked through the birds for collar numbers and to confirm ID, BUT I myself, can not confirm that there was a Tundra in this group or not. I know.........BAD BIRDER (whack me upside my head with a binoc strap). BTW.........NO scoters....... in Ellis Bay anyway. 30+ AW PELICANS joining the one that has been there for months. There are 10,000 Tundra Swans aswimmin on the Mississippi in northeast Iowa, presumably taking a break on their way to Chesapeake Bay. The Dunlin was in Johnson Co. (Iowa City), south would bring it into eastern MO. The dark phase Gyrfalcon is in extreme northwest Iowa, the Golden Eagles were seen at Hitchcock WA, along the Missouri, so could follow the river into MO. The White-winged Scoter was at Desoto Bend NWR, on the Missouri. The Common Redpoll was in Lucas Co. associating with juncos; Kirksville, Macon, etc. would be on its path if it comes on down. The group of Sandhills were in Story Co. (Ames area), feeding in a field; a straight south path could bring them through central or east central MO. Things are looking up. So should we. SUCCESS at last. Saw the red screecher sitting on the edge of the hole, thank you Bob Fisher. He/she looked down at me as if to say "what are you looking at". I sat on the bench and it finally got comfortable enough to turn its head back to soak up the rays. It is a very pretty bird. Did a small jaunt to Jacomo and picked up some very attractive buffleheads still in what looks like full breeding plumage and the thing that I wondered about was there were only male and no female at sailboat cove. About a dozen of them and also about a dozen common goldeneye both male and female and a couple of pied-billed grebe. At the old swim beach there were a lot of what I think are greater scaup and some more goldeneye and very few bufflehead. 3 ring-billed gulls and a lot of coot and some Canada geese. Nice day to be out. Hi mo-birders, My dad and I made a trip to Squaw Creek today to enjoy the Snow Geese and Bald Eagle spectacle. We did not find the Black Ducks or any Ibis, but it is getting pretty birdy out there. The Dec. 3 tally reports 270,000 Snows and 75 Bald Eagles- and I think there was probably more today. Mallards were the next most abundant specie. A couple other highlights included... nice views of Ross' Geese a juvenile Swan- looking like a Trumpeter a very tan Merlin (at the northern point of the wildlife loop) 5 huddled up Killdeer a few Golden-Crowned Kinglets- mobbing the Merlin see ya, Matt Gearheart KC mgearheart@juno.com ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Someone asked whether it was worth going to Smithville Lake. I stopped off at the dam there at 4:00 p.m. today without my scope. Denny Diekroeger was there with a scope. About 200 gulls had gathered for the night roost, and I saw a couple of Pied-billed Grebes and a Common Goldeneye, but otherwise the lake looked pretty empty. Denny reported a Horned Grebe. This is standard for early December in a warm year. All or most of the loons, grebes and migrating ducks have left. It's too warm for many Common Mergansers and Mallards to be in. Who knows? There may be a Ross' Gull at the Camp Branch Marina and a Long-billed Murrlet or eider at the Little Platte Marina. But, if I were planning of making a day (or even a half day) of it, I'd go somewhere else. Bob Fisher Independence, MOSubject: Re: BTW - Ross's GULL in Wisconsin

Frances: I just got back from Otter Slough and checked my E-mails. I guess that you were wanting me to respond to your Siskin question...Yes, they are eating niger and, to a lesser degree, black oil sunflower. The large counts of Pine Siskins occur in the early morning (They are at my feeders and many are perched near the top of a large tree above my house) and again in the evening. Throughout the day, I will usually see only a few Siskins at my feeders. They are very vocal, as they work their way from tree to tree. The main reason I bought this house was that (other than it was relatively cheap) there is a creek bordering my property that flows year-round with trees, brush, etc. growing on the banks. There are many sinkholes in this neighborhood (probably explains the price of my house) and I suspect the there are a few springs around. I get some interesting birds during migration...not exactly "dripping off the trees", but enough to cause me to watch the weather patterns and get up early! Anyway, food, water, and cover are all available. Good Birding! Doug Willis Farmington,Mo. St. Francois CountySubject: Otter Slough 12-07-01

Since his retirement, a replacement hasn't been named that I know of. I

Subject: pine siskinsOn my "lunch hour" observed two Pine Siskins at a feeder in the front yard of 1215 Goetz, Joplin. Since I live at 1711 Goetz I think I'll acquaint myself with the neighbors. Also I'll take down my hummingbird feeder and put up niger feeders. Will have to do it Monday, however: I'm out the door to Wichita right now. Bob Fisher, in an earlier post, was correct in my opinion: Pine Siskins were regular at feeders in the 70's and 80's. Somewhat uncommon through the 90's. We lived at Emporia, Liberal, and Garden City, KS., throughout the 80's and regularly had them then. Haven't had them at a feeder since moving to Missouri in 86'. Good birding, LH 12-07-01. It is my understanding that the large preying mantis is another imported
insect for use by farmers. Does anyone know that this is true?
A friend on a farm in Ga. has been rescuing hummers for years from the
giant preying mantis at her home. She said she listens for a cry of alarm
from the birds which visit her feeder. If she isn't quick enough, the bird
will not survive.
This seems like a horrible way for a hummer to die.

I have had a few looks at it on different days, but it is right on the edge of my binoculars' range, so I have not gotten the best look. From what I've seen, I'd almost call it a light-variant of a Harlan's. Has that been discussed? _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ----------------------------------------------- MOBIRDS Discussion list mailto:mobirds-l@muhealth.org To unsubscribe: http://muhealth.org/~majordomo/info.htmlSubject: Re: St. Louis area fieldtrip

Lots of Canadas and mallards. Have had Surf scoters, R-N Grebe, B-L Kittiwake here at this time of year, but this was in the past. With the "improvements", this lake is used by MANY people now. IF it is too nice of a day on the weekends, there will be rowers or others to disrupt the birds on the lake. IF it's lousy weather or early in the day , you have a better shot of seeing birds. Enter to look at the lake from both Creve Couer Mill Road AND Marine (that goes through the middle of the park.) Passerines in the park on top of the hill will probably be the usual stuff expected in the woods at this time of year. > > Is there currently hunting at Busch? What ever is in season now will be hunted exept for ducks and geese. Just be aware if you are walking around in fields (a couple of people with orange hat or vests maybe? NO WHITE) Staying on trails is a good idea but still be aware of any hunters in the area. >Any suggestions as to a route there (2 > hrs or less)? Um........I'm not sure what you are asking. From where? Anne's house in Kirkwood or Columbia? From Anne's, take I-270 north to Hwy 40 and go west. It's just off of Hwy 40. Take Hwy 94 exit off of Hwy 40 to Busch (look for signs) Turn onto Hwy D (second stoplight) and you will go past entrance. From Columbia....doesn't Hwy 40/61 hook up with I-70? Just take Hwy 40 east to Hwy 94 rihgt? There is construction still going on around the junction of Hwy 94 & 40, but don't know if Hwy 40 is closed or not. (there has been temporary lane closures with congestion, but it's different from one day to the next) Go to www.ksdk.com or www.ktvifox2.com for any road closures. Probably not much help, but that's all I got. Steve, Is that number for Snow Geese a typo? Did Heather really report 68 thousand snow geese at Swan Lake? (They'll have to start charging parking fees for geese!) Edge: I don't see the discrepancy, but if I were to rewrite the directions, I might say "Turn right (south) and continue one mile to the park entrance." It would have made sense to also include the F14 site on Map 3 as well as Map 2. Kirkwood Park is likely only to have common woodland birds, as would the nearby Powder Valley Nature Center. At Creve Coeur Lake, there's always a chance for some interesting waterfowl. Both parks may be heavily used if the weather is nice. Randy K. I have checked Birds of the St. Louis Area. There is a discrepancy between the written directions and the location of F14 on the map. Is Kirkwood Park north or south of Manchester? Is it worth a visit? Has anyone been to Creve Coeur Lake recently? Report? Suggestions? Is there currently hunting at Busch? Any suggestions as to a route there (2 hrs or less)? All suggestions cheerfully accepted. Would like to at least look like I know what I'm doing. The overwhelming majority of the fewer than ten responses were in favor of trying for the Rufous Hummingbird in Kirkwood. We will visit the site in Kirkwood. We MAY visit one or more of the following: Creve Coeur Lake Kirkwood Park Busch C.A. Riverlands Env. Demonstration Area. Obviously, we cannot do all of these. REDA is out of the way, but we can do if something is reported. Even though we are going east, we will meet at 6:30 a.m. at Biscayne Mall near the McDonald's. It is not necessary to bring lunch. We will stop and purchase lunch. We will try to be back in Columbia by 6 p.m. Edge Wade Fieldtrip leader edgew@socket.net ----------------------------------------------- MOBIRDS Discussion list mailto:mobirds-l@muhealth.org To unsubscribe: http://muhealth.org/~majordomo/info.htmlSubject: Re: Swan Lake NWR this week

There are more birds at REDA than I've seen it a while. - 4 COMMON LOONS were reported from Linc. Shields, but I only found 2. Since the lighting was bad in the late afternoon, I'm not sure of the ID. - More (!) divers and dabblers today. usual stuff....... no zooties (that I could see) - GREATER WHITE FRONTS at Teal pond and Heron Pond - *GREAT EGRET* at Heron Pond on 12/5 - ~6 Bonies in with the ring-bills. - the "non-existent" Krider's R-T Hawk at Two Pecan. - LOTS of sparrows at the Ellis Bay side of the Two Pecan Trail (Why THIS section is closed just makes no sense to me, particularly if they allow bank fishing in the very same area - if using the waterfowl rest area reason. Gotta' love dem gov't rules.) Hope the 'backdoor' cold front will bring in even more birds. Thank you, Bob Lewis and others, for your input on image-stabilization binocs. I'm glad to know IS works. For myself, I was thinking of less expensive compacts to use in the vehicle since my B&L Elites are fairly new. And, yes, using them at 70mph, if I were driving, would pale the safety issue of cell phones!
