43 TRUMPETER SWANS - ** HIGHEST # this season (ever maybe? ANY info on this
would be appreciated) were seen at REDA on 12/10/01. They were dispersed
between Ellis Bay near Teal Pond and then the rest were in Heron Pond.

Another birder looked through the birds for collar numbers and to confirm
ID,
BUT I myself, can not confirm that there was a Tundra in this group or not.
I know.........BAD BIRDER (whack me upside my head with a binoc strap).

BTW.........NO scoters....... in Ellis Bay anyway.
30+ AW PELICANS joining the one that has been there for months.

Weeks report of Sunday December 9

Black-legged Kittiwake
Dunlin
Gyrfalcon
Snowy Owl
Tundra Swan
Least Sandpiper
Euraisan-collared Dove
Winter Wren
Golden Eagle
White-winged Scoter
Prairie Falcon
Common Redpoll
Sandhill Crane

These species were seen in Iowa the past week. There are 10,000 Tundra
Swans aswimmin on the Mississippi in northeast Iowa, presumably taking a
break on their way to Chesapeake Bay. The Dunlin was in Johnson Co. (Iowa
City), south would bring it into eastern MO. The dark phase Gyrfalcon is in
extreme northwest Iowa, the Golden Eagles were seen at Hitchcock WA, along
the Missouri, so could follow the river into MO. The White-winged Scoter
was at Desoto Bend NWR, on the Missouri. The Common Redpoll was in Lucas
Co. associating with juncos; Kirksville, Macon, etc. would be on its path if
it comes on down. The group of Sandhills were in Story Co. (Ames area),
feeding in a field; a straight south path could bring them through central
or east central MO.

Things are looking up. So should we.

It was seen both Sat. and Sun sitting in the exact same position. We birded Sat
around 2pm and Sun at 9am. Across Burr Oak creek we found many winter birds in
the underbrush. Bluebirds, both kinds of kinglets, many sparrows, and the
common woodpeckers.

We located the winter wren at Rock Bridge State Park today at about 11
A.M. It was still in the brush pile just below the rock bridge, reported
first by Edge Wade and later by Barb Allen.
Thanks to both of them for their report. We enjoyed this cute
dimunitive wren with the jaunty cocked tail.

SUCCESS at last. Saw the red screecher sitting on the edge of the hole,
thank you Bob Fisher. He/she looked down at me as if to say "what are
you looking at". I sat on the bench and it finally got comfortable
enough to turn its head back to soak up the rays. It is a very pretty
bird.
Did a small jaunt to Jacomo and picked up some very attractive
buffleheads still in what looks like full breeding plumage and the thing
that I wondered about was there were only male and no female at sailboat
cove. About a dozen of them and also about a dozen common goldeneye
both male and female and a couple of pied-billed grebe. At the old swim
beach there were a lot of what I think are greater scaup and some more
goldeneye and very few bufflehead. 3 ring-billed gulls and a lot of
coot and some Canada geese. Nice day to be out.

the Hampton Lake parking lot,Busch CA,St Charles Co.Flew into a row of pines
across the road from the parking lot.May hang out for a bit if anybody is
interested in trying for it.
The only birds of note at the Fallen Oak feeders were a few RB-NUTHATCHES
and GOLDEN-CROWN KINGLETS.(Looks like they have torn up the once good
understory habitat in there big time! Think it may mean fewer

Results of the SLAS trip to Riverlands EDA, St. Charles co. 12/8/01.

**35 TRUMPETER SWANS - Largest number so far this season.

1 BLACK DUCK - Heron pond
LOTS more dabblers including No. Pintail, Gr-wgd Teal.
2 BLACK SCOTERS - Ellis Bay - SLAS group. located between Heron pond and
observation tower.
3 SURF SCOTERS - Ellis Bay - SLAS group. located between Heron pond and
observation tower
4 SNOW BUNTINGS - Teal Pond
1 COMMON LOON - Linc. Shields
GREATER WHITE FRONTED GEESE (not sure of count all together. 40+ at least)
Krider's R-T Hawk in one of Two Pecan Trees - bird is too light for a
Harlan's light-phase, IMO (and a few others)..... but who am I anyway - no
hawk expert for sure. (Think this bird was also IDed as a Prairie falcon and
Ferruginous Hawk last year during the Smew episode :-)

NO S-E Owls seen at dusk. Too windy maybe.

Rufous Hummingbird.

Bill Rowe's discovery of the the ducks at REDA and his sharing of the
information in Alton did much to boost the morale of an already soaring
group. Thanks, Bill.

It was good to see the St. Louis Audubon group and to join them for a bit of

Hi mo-birders,

My dad and I made a trip to Squaw Creek today to
enjoy the Snow Geese and Bald Eagle spectacle.
We did not find the Black Ducks or any Ibis, but
it is getting pretty birdy out there. The Dec. 3 tally
reports 270,000 Snows and 75 Bald Eagles- and I think
there was probably more today. Mallards were the next
most abundant specie. A couple other highlights
included...

nice views of Ross' Geese
a juvenile Swan- looking like a Trumpeter
a very tan Merlin (at the northern point of the wildlife loop)
5 huddled up Killdeer
a few Golden-Crowned Kinglets- mobbing the Merlin

see ya,

Someone asked whether it was worth going to Smithville Lake. I stopped off at
the dam there at 4:00 p.m. today without my scope. Denny Diekroeger was there
with a scope. About 200 gulls had gathered for the night roost, and I saw a
couple of Pied-billed Grebes and a Common Goldeneye, but otherwise the lake
looked pretty empty. Denny reported a Horned Grebe. This is standard for early
December in a warm year. All or most of the loons, grebes and migrating ducks
have left. It's too warm for many Common Mergansers and Mallards to be in.

Who knows? There may be a Ross' Gull at the Camp Branch Marina and a
Long-billed Murrlet or eider at the Little Platte Marina. But, if I were
planning of making a day (or even a half day) of it, I'd go somewhere else.

Frances:
I just got back from Otter Slough and checked my E-mails. I guess that you were
wanting me to respond to your Siskin question...Yes, they are eating niger and,
to a lesser degree, black oil sunflower. The large counts of Pine Siskins occur
in the early morning (They are at my feeders and many are perched near the top
of a large tree above my house) and again in the evening. Throughout the day, I
will usually see only a few Siskins at my feeders. They are very vocal, as they
work their way from tree to tree. The main reason I bought this house was that
(other than it was relatively cheap) there is a creek bordering my property
that flows year-round with trees, brush, etc. growing on the banks. There are
many sinkholes in this neighborhood (probably explains the price of my house)
and I suspect the there are a few springs around. I get some interesting birds
during migration...not exactly "dripping off the trees", but enough to cause me
to watch the weather patterns and get up early! Anyway, food, water, and cover
are all available.

Good Birding!

Drove to Otter Slough CA (Stoddard County) this morning. Birds of a feather do
indeed flock together!!!

MDC numbers, which were posted in the headquarters:
Total Ducks-51,100
Snow Geese-75,000(!) White Fronted Geese-4,201

The following were easily visible from Conservation Drive:
Snow Goose-(Blue and White) ridiculous numbers on the ground & overhead.
Couldn't pick out a Ross Goose, though.

White Fronted Goose-Lots...many mingling near the Snow Geese.
Canada Goose-Many.
Mallard-Mind-boggling numbers.
Gadwall-hundreds.
Pintail-hundreds.
Shoveler-hundreds.
American Wigeon-many.
Green Winged Teal-25
Coot-hundreds.
Pied Billed Grebe-10
Ring Necked Duck-hundreds.
Scaup-many.
Ruddy Duck-many,many.
Canvasback-many,many.
Redhead-35
Bufflehead-1
ALSO: Killdeer-many.
Yellowlegs,spp.-2(They were difficult to make size comparisons with anything. I
suspect Greater Yellowlegs, due to their

emphatic "Tew, Tew, Tew!" call when they flew overhead. They appeared to be
rather large, also.

A great, although drizzly, day of birding! The headquarters at Otter Slough is
open during duck season and has an impressive array of mounted waterfowl,
shorebird, raptor, and mammallian specimens. Very Useful for fine-tuning those
field identification skills. Good Birding!

Bob,
To answer your questions - yes and yes. I think many
of the Canadas do stop elsewhere-especially with this
kind of weather. The other big change is that there
used to be few if any snow geese, but the last few
years there have been almost as many as at Squaw
Creek.

CAS field trip folks,

I visited Anne's backyard from 2:45 to 3:30 today. The hummer made at least
3 visits to the window feeder during that time. The MO was for the bird to
come from the water tower side into the climbing rose that covers the
trellis at the first gate. The bird would sit in the tangle for a little
while then go to the feeder and drink. Between drinks it appeared to be
watching itself in the window.

Ann has some chairs in the backyard, I think 6 to 8. If you are 6 foot
tall, watch out for the climbing rose!

I got digital pics and will send to Edge as soon as I can get them shrunk
down in size.

Mike

The overwhelming majority of the fewer than ten responses were in favor of
trying for the Rufous Hummingbird in Kirkwood.

We will visit the site in Kirkwood.

We MAY visit one or more of the following:
Creve Coeur Lake
Kirkwood Park
Busch C.A.
Riverlands Env. Demonstration Area.

Obviously, we cannot do all of these. REDA is out of the way, but we can do
if something is reported.

Even though we are going east, we will meet at 6:30 a.m. at Biscayne Mall

We will try to be back in Columbia by 6 p.m.

Tommie,

The past coordinator was James D. Wilson, State Ornithologist with MDC.
Since his retirement, a replacement hasn't been named that I know of. I
spoke to Jim this past Wednesday (he was the speaker at our Burroughs
general meeting) and he wasn't aware of how the position was going to be
filled.

If you don't hear from anyone of the listserv that knows, I would suggest
you contact Keith Pardiek (sp?) at the BBS website to find out if he's been
replaced yet. The web address (that isn't responding for me right now) is:

On my "lunch hour" observed two Pine Siskins at a feeder in the front yard of
1215 Goetz, Joplin.

Since I live at 1711 Goetz I think I'll acquaint myself with the neighbors.
Also I'll take down my hummingbird feeder and put up niger feeders. Will have
to do it Monday,

however: I'm out the door to Wichita right now.
Bob Fisher, in an earlier post, was correct in my opinion: Pine Siskins were
regular at feeders in

the 70's and 80's. Somewhat uncommon through the 90's. We lived at Emporia,
Liberal, and

Garden City, KS., throughout the 80's and regularly had them then. Haven't had
them at a feeder

since moving to Missouri in 86'. Good birding, LH 12-07-01. Jasper Co., MO.

It is my understanding that the large preying mantis is another imported
insect for use by farmers. Does anyone know that this is true?
A friend on a farm in Ga. has been rescuing hummers for years from the
giant preying mantis at her home. She said she listens for a cry of alarm
from the birds which visit her feeder. If she isn't quick enough, the bird
will not survive.
This seems like a horrible way for a hummer to die.

Larry,
Trees were variable height, but the Long-ears were concentrated in the 12
ft. or taller. There was not heavy brush. At Poosey C.A., Livingston Co.,
the Long-ears are in 12 ft. or taller clusters of trees, much like
windbreak, otherwise surrounded by grass.

We didn't play tapes for Saw-whets. Had so many people that we felt we were
able to really scour potential perches.

Lawrence,

The trees were approximately 10-20 feet tall. They were in various stages of
health. The owls were seen in the healthier trees.

There wasn't heavy brush. The trees were planted in rows (roughly).

No Saw-whet Owl tapes were played that I know of, however Bob Fisher was
attempting to entice Goshawks to show with his injured rabbit tape.

I know the bird you're talking about at Two Pecans. It usually sits in the
tree farthest from the road. I have had a few looks at it on different days,
but it is right on the edge of my binoculars' range, so I have not gotten
the best look. From what I've seen, I'd almost call it a light-variant of a
Harlan's. Has that been discussed?

Have to look at this myself. Don't know anything about this park. Maybe
someone else can respond.
>
> Has anyone been to Creve Coeur Lake recently? Report? Suggestions?
Was there Thursday. Had COMMON LOON, Bonies, nice raft of ducks with the
usual stuff.
Lots of Canadas and mallards.
Have had Surf scoters, R-N Grebe, B-L Kittiwake here at this time of year,
but this was in
the past. With the "improvements", this lake is used by MANY people now. IF
it is too nice of a day on the weekends, there will be rowers or others to
disrupt the birds on the lake.
IF it's lousy weather or early in the day , you have a better shot of seeing
birds.
Enter to look at the lake from both Creve Couer Mill Road AND Marine (that
goes through the middle of the park.)
Passerines in the park on top of the hill will probably be the usual stuff
expected in the woods at this time of year.

>
> Is there currently hunting at Busch?
What ever is in season now will be hunted exept for ducks and geese. Just be
aware if you are walking around in fields (a couple of people with orange
hat or vests maybe? NO WHITE) Staying on trails is a good idea but still be
aware of any hunters in the area.

>Any suggestions as to a route there (2
> hrs or less)?
Um........I'm not sure what you are asking.
From where? Anne's house in Kirkwood or Columbia?
From Anne's, take I-270 north to Hwy 40 and go west. It's just off of Hwy
40. Take Hwy 94 exit off of Hwy 40 to Busch (look for signs) Turn onto Hwy D
(second stoplight) and you will go past entrance.

From Columbia....doesn't Hwy 40/61 hook up with I-70? Just take Hwy 40 east
to Hwy 94 rihgt?

There is construction still going on around the junction of Hwy 94 & 40, but
don't know if Hwy 40 is closed or not. (there has been temporary lane
closures with congestion, but it's different from one day to the next)
Go to www.ksdk.com or www.ktvifox2.com for any road closures.

Probably not much help, but that's all I got.

There are more birds at REDA than I've seen it a while.
- 4 COMMON LOONS were reported from Linc. Shields, but I only found 2. Since
the lighting was bad in the late afternoon, I'm not sure of the ID.
- More (!) divers and dabblers today. usual stuff....... no zooties (that I
could see)
- GREATER WHITE FRONTS at Teal pond and Heron Pond
- *GREAT EGRET* at Heron Pond on 12/5
- ~6 Bonies in with the ring-bills.
- the "non-existent" Krider's R-T Hawk at Two Pecan.
- LOTS of sparrows at the Ellis Bay side of the Two Pecan Trail (Why THIS
section is closed just makes no sense to me, particularly if they allow bank
fishing in the very same area - if using the waterfowl rest area reason.
Gotta' love dem gov't rules.)

Hope the 'backdoor' cold front will bring in even more birds.

Well, well. Folks, if you have not been a party to Joyce's saga of futile
attempts to see this bird, you cannot fully appreciate the significance of
her message.
Congrats!

The Spotted Towhee remains at Vicki Neill's in Columbia. He was seen at
noon today in the hedgerow to the left of the driveway. He was sitting on a
branch about one foot off the ground preening, then chasing sparrows on the
ground.

Edge, I'll be so darned glad to get out that it just won't matter whether A
or B. Besides, you know I always vote with the majority on things like that.
Looking forward. Della

Thank you, Bob Lewis and others, for your input on image-stabilization
binocs. I'm glad to know IS works. For myself, I was thinking of less
expensive compacts to use in the vehicle since my B&L Elites are fairly new.
And, yes, using them at 70mph, if I were driving, would pale the safety
issue of cell phones!
